To Bennu and Back: A Pre-TAG Interview with Thomas Zurbuchen and Lori Glaze

After almost two years in orbit at asteroid Bennu it’s nearly go time for OSIRIS-REx—or, should I say, Touch-and-Go time! Later today, October 20, starting at 1:50 p.m. EDT (17:50 UTC) the van-sized spacecraft will begin its descent toward the surface of Bennu, culminating in the attempt to siphon up at least 60 grams of…

The fact—and it is a fact—that Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, which has been orbiting #Mars for almost 15 years, was able to capture a picture this clear of Perseverance's descent from 700 km away as it (MRO) was traveling 3 km A SECOND is simply amazing. Really. Like if you agree.
Today’s #Perseverance rover landing on Mars was a success! There are now two new robots on Mars—Perseverance and the Ingenuity helicopter it brought along—which touched down in Jezero Crater at 3:44 p.m. EST / 20:44 UTC today, February 18. The confirmation signal was received here on Earth, 127 million miles away, 11 minutes and 21 seconds later at 3:55 p.m. EST. The first low-resolution greyscale images from the rover’s hazard avoidance cameras arrived shortly after that, showing views of the ground in front and behind Perseverance. I colorized them to somewhat approximate natural Mars color (one seen here). Better ones will be coming soon to the Mars 2020 raw image page, but for now this is our first view from inside Jezero Crater! Congratulations to @NASA, @NASAJPL, and the #Mars2020 EDL team!
Saturn's moon Mimas seen crossing in front of the planet's limb; a color-composite made from images captured by #Cassini on February 13, 2010. The moon's obvious Death Star appearance comes from the 130 km-wide Herschel Crater on its northern hemisphere. This similarity is purely coincidental; Star Wars ANH came out three years before Herschel was discovered in Voyager 1 images! Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/SSI/Jason Major
