Another great raw image from the Cassini orbiter, showing the shepherd moon Daphnis raising high-crested waves in the edges of Saturn’s A ring bordering the Keeler Gap. Shadows cast by the low-angle sunlight show the height of these sinuous disturbances.
Daphnis’ gravity affects the ring material both in front of it and behind.
Discovered in 2005, Daphnis is just under 5 miles wide. Based on the length of the cast shadows, the trailing waves must be at least a mile high themselves. Amazing how much material is being cast upwards from a ring only about 3o feet thick.
The F ring lies just beyond the star-specked gulf on the right half of this image.
