Mission

Lights in the Dark provides a daily glimpse out into our cosmic back yard, from the viewpoint of the fascinating little rovers and satellites that are currently on active duty around the solar system. They are our eyes and ears to the wonders of space, the proxies by which we can explore our planetary neighborhood. As we move about our daily life they are also busy with their duties – investigating, measuring, driving, flying, and photographing places humans may not go for centuries, if at all. Yet these places exist as surely as those more familiar to us, and are made of the same stellar “stuff”. They are our family, and these are their portraits.

Inspired by Riding With Robots on the High Frontier.

  1. This website ROCKS!! Facinating stuff … will there be any discussions into helping remedials like myself understand things like Einstein’s Special and General theories of Relativity ?? I was watching a documentary of them this weekend but I’m having trouble grasping the concepts…

    • Thanks Robert B! Sorry, but the most schooling you’ll get here is Astronomy 101 mixed with Basic Photography and some art class. Anything requiring a calculator will not be covered. 😉

      Don’t worry….there won’t be any pop quizzes.

  2. Hi Mr Major,

Sorry, but don’t know your first name, hence the formality!!

A brilliant site, and a truly worthy successor now that Bill’s stopped doing Riding with Robots.
Thanks from all of us amateurs who find this fascinating and appreciate the huge amount of time and effort that you put into producing it.

    Keep up the brilliant work.

    • David…believe me, I was heartbroken to see that Bill was signing off RwR. So much so that it wasn’t hours before I had my mind set on keeping it going somehow. So I contacted Bill, told him what I was planning and kind of “got his blessing” on the idea, so to say. I had too much respect for his efforts over the years to just jump right in, plus he helped me out a lot on what would be required to actually make it happen. Hopefully we’ll see him back around soon. Until then, LITD has a firm hold on the torch. (Trying to, anyway!) There’s just so much to be seen.

Thanks for the support. (And you can call me Jay.)
