Ok, I know it’s kind of a misleading title because it’s only 4 days into the new year but still, at magnitude -4.0 tonight’s flyover of the ISS was one of the brightest I’ve ever seen, this year or any other! At 6:28 p.m. CST, the ISS rose in the northeast and passed nearly exactly…

Happy New Year from the ISS!
2011 has given us many amazing images and videos of our planet from the International Space Station, which received its last US-built components this year during the STS-133 and 134 shuttle missions. The Expedition 30 crew now aboard the ISS will ring in 2012 from orbit, and they have recorded the video above to wish…
A Beautiful Comet-rise at Dawn (VIDEO)
The video above contains a time-lapse movie of Earth’s horizon at dawn on December 21, showing lightning storms, stars, airglow… and the sungrazing comet Lovejoy rising above the atmosphere! (And I must say its new tail looks amazing!)
The Journey Home
A beautiful and mesmerizing series of time-lapse videos taken by astronaut Ron Garan during his last weeks aboard the International Space Station, this must-see montage is made all the sweeter by a score from Peter Gabriel and an intro from Ron himself. Ron wrote in his blog entry on FragileOasis.org: Although the International Space Station…
ISS Docking Success!
Tonight at 11:24pm CST a TMA-22 Soyuz vehicle containing the three members of Expedition 29/30 crew successfully docked with the ISS, 248 miles above the south Pacific. It was the first docking of a manned vehicle to the ISS since the end of the shuttle program.
Earth From Orbit – in HD!
Watch this! Videographer Michael König assembled several time-lapse videos taken from the crew aboard the ISS into one long continuous video, and cleaned up the footage and added music as well. Really beautiful work on an already stunning series of videos! Needless to say this has gone the rounds on the ‘net today.
A Front Row Seat to a Spacewalk
This was just so cool I had to share. It’s a photo taken by astronaut Doug Wheelock while on EVA on November 3, 2007 with Scott Parazynski aboard the ISS. He describes the scene on his Twitpic post (in the eloquent way only Doug can): “A front-row seat to a spacewalk. I remember this moment like…
The World Keeps Spinnin’ Round
Just… just watch it: Wow. Now that’s an interesting view! Looking north as the ISS passed southeast over North America on the night of October 18, we get a really great perspective on our planet as a globe spinning in space! Which, of course, it is. Not to mention an awesome view of the aurora…
A Glow From Above
Many of the recent images and videos I’ve shared here have featured amazing views from the Space Station. At 250 miles up, astronauts aboard the ISS enjoy an unprecedented and privileged view of our world. In addition to having a vantage point from which to view the countries, continents and oceans below, they also get…
Goodnight Moon
Another stunning view from the Space Station, this photo was taken by Expedition 28 astronaut Ron Garan on July 31, 2011 and shows the Moon seeming to sink into the ocean of air that is our life-supporting atmosphere. As the Moon passes behind Earth’s limb it appears to get squished because of light being refracted…
Around the World in 60 Seconds
Want to blow your mind? Watch this: Now watch it 14 more times for an idea of what the astronauts aboard the ISS get to see every day. No wonder after five months up there they still don’t want to come down! This gorgeous video was made by science teacher James Drake using images downloaded from…
Space Mountain
Colombia’s Pico de Cristobal Colon rises into the sky in this beautiful photo taken on July 9 by Ron Garan, a NASA astronaut and Expedition 27 flight engineer aboard the International Space Station. Pico de Cristobal Colon (Spanish for “Christopher Columbus’ Peak) is the highest mountain in Colombia and the fifth most prominent in the…
